October 20, 2011 Leave a comment

Here are a few highpoints from the Facebook event page to get you in the mood.

To help show our appreciation for the local video game community, we’re hosting a super terrific video game extravaganza challenge! The date for this event is set for Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 from 11am till 5pm.

We’re going to have a video game contest, raffles, and even some super secret super awesome special guests!

1st place will get a $100 Streetlight Records gift certificate, 2nd place will get a $50 gift certificate, and 3rd place will get a $25 gift certificate. Everyone that shows up at the start time of 11am will get one raffle ticket per person (not including the players, sorry). The raffles will take place between rounds for gift certificates and possibly more.

Speaking of rounds, there will be three rounds of gaming. Each player must participate in each round to get something.

14 players will be chosen on Thursday night to participate (put your name in the hat on the Facebook event page). The three genres of games to be played are: Puzzle, Driving, and Rhythm. Remember, to win anything as a player you must play all three events. If you are unable to make it, please let me know so that I can give your spot to someone else. Now get practicing on your game skills and good luck!

A Roundup of the Season’s Video Games

With the Video Game Expo just around the corner and Batman: Arkham City out now, I realized that there are a lot of cool games coming out soon. The big ones coming out relatively soon are Batman (out now!), Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (11/11), Battlefield 3 (10/25), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (11/08), Silent Hill (01/2012), Assassins Creed: Revelations (11/15), Saint’s Row 3 (11/15), Uncharted 3 (11/01), and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (11/20). It’s going to be a busy, if not expensive, holiday season.

October is a relatively quiet month with two of the biggest games of the season competing for your hard earned cheddar. I didn’t get into the Battlefield series so I’ve already pre-ordered my copy of Batman I loved the first game Batman: Arkham Asylum. It came out in 2009 and sold nearly two million copies in just the first three weeks alone! It was the first super hero game where I actually felt like the super hero portrayed in the game. Hanging upside down, stealth take downs? Check. Batarang your to face? Check. Bone crushing x-ray moves? MORE PLEASE! Fortunately I am positive all this and more will take place in Arkham City. The new game looks to be everything good about the first but a few new tweaks and TONS of super villains from the comic series (fellow comic book nerds rejoice!) Like Mike Myers said as his character “Dieter” in the old SNL skit “Sprockets”, “Now I am as happy as a little school girl”.

November is just being a real jerk to my wallet. The other anticipated big hits of the year, Modern Warfare 3, Assassin’s Creed 4, Saint’s Row 3, Uncharted 3, and Legend of Zelda #457245 (feels like it sometimes), are released then. My housemates are a bit torn over which ones they’ll be getting. I’m sure we’ll end up with Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and possibly another single guy (sorry Elise). This game has received a metric ton of hype because it has such a solid base to work from. It’s a good series with everything to lose if they mess with their game play. I wish I could play-test it to make sure but I don’t have any pals in the video game industry anymore. I’m also positive that another housemate will probably get the new Assassin’s Creed and an increase in his blood pressure. I’ve watched him degenerate into a pile of self-loathing over the last two. I can’t imagine it changing much over this one.

Still, I am surprised so many game companies would release that many good titles at the same time. As of now, I am only looking forward to playing Batman, the Halo re-release, and Diablo 3. I am a bit fickle with my gaming dollars. If you ask me, I think it’s almost financial suicide. They should’ve staggered the release dates a bit better. Oh well, it’s not like we’re in a recession or anything, right? Fortunately I can trade in my old movies and games to help make the price not sting so much.

Now that I’ve given a brief overview of what’s coming out soon, tell me which games are you looking forward to? What are you playing now? Are you coming to the Video Game Expo this Saturday, October 22nd from 11am to 4pm-ish? I’d like to see what you have to say about the current onslaught of new games. Until then, watch out for Eggplant Wizards.
