Iris DeMent, who is one of the great singer-songwriters of our time, recently released a new album titled The Trackless Woods.

A skillful lyricist whose songs range from praise and joy to loss, longing, and sorrow, DeMent went a different route for this album. The Trackless Woods is collection of poems by Russian modernist poet Anna Akhmatova set to music created by DeMent. The result is a quietly beautiful record that grows deeper with each listen.

If you’re looking for straight-ahead folk or roots music, this one may not be for you, but if you’re a DeMent faithful, who understands the songwriter’s emotional and lyrical depths, The Trackless Woods is a lovely addition to her catalog and a thoughtful project dedicated to DeMent and husband Greg Brown’s daughter, who was adopted from Russia when she was 6 years old.
