Sunday Morning Music: Ben Harper Teams Up with His Mom
by Cat Johnson
Ben Harper grew up in his family’s music shop. The Folk Music Center and Museum in Claremont, California, was the home away from home for a deeply musical family that prioritizes music education and folk traditions.
Recently, Harper teamed up with his mom, Ellen, to create an album that pays tribute to their family, their musical roots and the shop. Titled Childhood Home, the album is a reflection of countless hours of the two Harpers playing and singing together. As Harper says, “It felt like a lifetime of creativity that was waiting to happen between the two of us.”
An intimate view into the depth and breadth of Harper’s influences and family, far from the big-stage and bright lights that we normally see him in, Childhood Home honors the people and shop, that raised him.
The album, explains Harper in the following documentary A House is a Home, is “as much a celebration of this music store as it is a body of work.” He adds, “I wish my grandparents were alive to see it and hear it because they are a part of every note.”
