Sunday Morning Music: 5 Killer Gospel Funk Tracks

GospelFunk

by Cat Johnson

Spanning the space between Saturday night, super-funky parties and Sunday morning church gatherings sits an under-appreciated genre known as gospel funk. Full of deep grooves, disco guitar, mean basslines and snap-to-attention drums, gospel funk, which emerged and peaked in the 1970s, served as a way to get and keep young people interested in going to church and gave the congregation a way to get down while lifting their spirits up.

Numero Records has released, under the series title Good God!, several deep gospel funk compilations on both CD and vinyl so if this is your thing, check them out.
