In the Spotlight: Brittany Howard and Ruby Amanfu
by Cat Johnson
Fan of the Alabama Shakes? Into vinyl? There’s a newish 7″ that I must tell you about. Brittany Howard of the Alabama Shakes and Ruby Amanfu, who I’ve learned is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who has worked on a bunch of different music projects including singing backup on Jack White’s solo release Blunderbuss, teamed up for a top-notch single.
The two artists, who sound amazing together and take turns with lead vocal duties, are among a select bunch of acts that White’s Third Man Records has released 7″s for as part of its Blue Series.
On this particular release, the duo throws a one-two punch of awesomeness. The A side is a cover of Rodriguez’s “I Wonder,” (far and away my favorite Rodriguez song) and the B side is a cover of “When My Man Comes Home,” a tune first recorded by the one and only Memphis Minnie.
Maybe my unbridled enthusiasm for this single is because it hits two separate veins of American music that are chock full of riches, or maybe it’s because I’d check out anything that Brittany Howard released, or maybe it’s because the whole thing just works.
