In the Spotlight: Stevie B.
Imagine pop/dance music got into the hands of breakdancers. Now think of the movie Breakin.’ What do you get? Freestyle, and it’s one of my favorite types of music.
Freestyle is a genre that began before I was born but it held on until the early ’90s and I still stand by it. It just reminds me of the summertime, being a little kid running around, being with my family and it being 110 degrees outside but still having a good time.
There are so many freestyle groups and singers with so many good songs but there is one man that needs to be mentioned before anyone else. Some people call him the King of Freestyle, Stevie B. He is the quintessential freestyle artist and the song you need to hear is “Spring Love.” It’s one of my favorite love songs ever and the video for it is amazing. It’s ’80s to the max!
In the video, Stevie B. has a jerry curl type of thing with steps shaved onto both sides of his head and the girl in the video has some fingerless glove things on and super huge feathered hair. “Spring Love” isn’t his only jam, he’s got “Party Your Body,” “Dreamin’ Of Love.” “I Wanna Be the One,” and lots more.
One time a couple of years ago I got to see Stevie B. in Salinas with Pitbull. Stevie B. was so fun and he sounded awesome. He played all of the hits and I saw a chick fight. It was wild! This past May, Stevie B. did a re-release of “Spring Love” featuring Pitbull. Honestly, I’m not saying it was bad but I liked it much better the way it was before it got remixed or whatever.
If freestyle is what you’re looking to get into, then Stevie B. is where you want to start.
