Mac Demarco – 2 (Captured Tracks, 2012)

by Caleb Nichols

I am extremely late in discovering Mac Demarco, but better late than never. Demarco’s latest offering, 2012’s appropriately titled 2 (his second album! Get it?), is the sort of album you always hope to run into but seldom do, chalk full of tasty melodies, weird lyrics and perfect hooks. What’s even better, Demarco has that really great quality that makes it all seem so easy (it isn’t).

I haven’t read anything about Demarco, but I’m willing to bet people are comparing him to Jonathan Richman and Stephen Malkmus, and they should! But they should also point out that, at least in to some degree, he bears a resemblance to Mason Jennings, or even a demented Jack Johnson.

This album is the sleeper hit of my life and I hope you buy it RIGHT NOW.
