Austra – Olympia (Domino, 2013)

by Caleb Nichols

Austra is a Canadian band that makes inventive pop music, noted for its dark wave, dream pop and dance elements. Their latest effort, Olympia, sounds massive and bright; a maximal production that departs from the darkness of previous effort, Feel It Break, and tends more towards a previously untapped pop buoyancy that suits singer Kate Stelmanis’s commanding vocal style.

Indeed, much of Olympia sounds fabulous and clubby without feeling like its only place is as the soundtrack of national lgbt pride month.

For fans of Lady Gaga, Kate Bush, Grimes
