Sunday Morning Music: Carolina Chocolate Drops

by Cat Johnson

“Black string band music is something you find between the lines. A lot of music has been based on string band and blues and spiritual music, but string band music has kind of been swept into the background.”
-Dom Flemons of the Carolina Chocolate Drops

Helping to drag the black string band tradition from near-extinction back into the spotlight, the Carolina Chocolate Drops are making a huge ripple among string band aficionados around the world. Combining respect and appreciation of traditional songs, styles and techniques with tongue-in-cheek humor and a modern flair, this is a band that is forging a trail of its own, laying the groundwork for a string band revival.

Recommended Listening: The band’s last two full-length albums, Leaving Eden and Genuine Negro Jig, are both well-crafted, boot-stomping, enjoyable listens that stand up to repeat listens. They provide a nice intro to the sound and feel of black string bands and showcase the abilities of the band-members to reach into the past, glean the treasures and breathe new life into them for today’s roots fans.
